How do I find the safest hospital in my city? +
Use the search bar above to enter your city name. We'll show all hospitals in that city ranked by our safety score. You can also filter by state and sort by CMS star rating, patient experience, or emergency availability.
Where does your hospital safety data come from? +
All data comes from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Provider Data Catalog โ the official US government source. This includes the Hospital General Information file, HCAHPS patient surveys, Timely & Effective Care measures, and Complications & Deaths data.
What does the Safety Score (0โ10) mean? +
Our Safety Score combines 6 official CMS metrics into a single number from 0 to 10. A score of 8.0+ means the hospital performs significantly better than the national average across most safety measures. Scores below 4.0 indicate performance worse than average in multiple areas.
How often is the data updated? +
CMS updates hospital data quarterly. Our database reflects the most recent CMS release from 2024. We update our scores whenever CMS releases new data.
Is a higher CMS star rating always better? +
Generally yes โ CMS 5-star hospitals have significantly better clinical outcomes. However, our composite Safety Score provides more nuance by weighting specific metrics. A hospital can have 4 CMS stars but a high Safety Score due to exceptional infection control and low readmission rates.
Does this cover all hospitals in the USA? +
We cover 5,426 Medicare-certified hospitals across all 50 states plus DC, Puerto Rico, Guam, and other territories. Some specialty hospitals (children's hospitals, psychiatric facilities) may not have all metrics available.
